Norm Talley's Upstairs Asylum kicks off the New Year with a split EP from two classy house operators whose sound perfectly fits on this timeless label. Miguel Herrnandez goes first with the breezy grooves and gentle jazz keys of 'Paradise King' then cranks up the energy levels slightly for 'Deep Soul Ensemble.' It's a humid cut with sugary chord injections and funky bass brilliance. Manuold then takes care of the flipside with 'Darkness Floor,' an upright and dynamic deep house hymn with smeared chords and wispy vocals adding a touch of soul. 'Underground Streght' leads on heavier kicks and here the pads swirl round and get fists pumping. Proof that deepness can still drive you on.
